Blue Canyon Technologies to Quadruple Reaction Wheel Output with $1M Investment
RTX’s Blue Canyon Technologies is increasing reaction wheel production from 650 to 2,400 units annually by allocating over $1 million in facility upgrades and new equipment. It has doubled its production footprint, implemented kitting and precision machinery, and secured long-term supplier agreements to mitigate supply-chain risks and meet surging small-satellite demand.
1. Capacity Expansion Plan
Blue Canyon Technologies is investing over $1 million to expand reaction wheel production capacity from 650 to 2,400 units annually, representing a nearly 400% increase. This expansion dedicates the majority of one facility to reaction wheel assembly to support growing demand for spacecraft attitude control systems.
2. Production Efficiency Upgrades
The company has optimized its production layout and implemented enhanced subassembly kitting processes, as well as installed an additional precision mill and next-generation precision balancing equipment to accelerate assembly and testing throughput.
3. Supply Chain and Market Demand
Blue Canyon secured long-term supplier agreements to ensure material availability and mitigate risks, responding to surging demand across small-satellite and larger spacecraft markets. Reaction wheel orders have totaled over 3,500 flight units since production began in 2014.
4. Business Impact
This strategic investment positions RTX’s Raytheon small satellite arm to capture increased market share in the growing spacecraft subsystems sector, potentially enhancing revenue contributions as space industry spending accelerates.
