BP Launches Production from 4–6 tcf ACG Gas Reserves, Eyes 400 bcm Babek Field
BP•BP has launched commercial natural gas production from 4–6 trillion cubic feet of non-associated gas reservoirs at Azerbaijan’s Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli block feeding the Sangachal Terminal. The company is preparing to take over operator duties for the Babek offshore gas field, holding an estimated 400 bcm of gas and 80 million tonnes of condensate to support a 250,000 boe/d target by 2027.
1. ACG Non-Associated Gas Production Launch
BP has commenced commercial extraction of non-associated gas from deeper and shallower reservoirs at the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli block, tapping 4–6 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas. Extracted gas and condensate will be sent via existing subsea pipelines to the Sangachal Terminal for processing.
2. Babek Field Operator Transition
The company is set to assume operator responsibilities for the offshore Babek gas field, estimated to hold 400 billion cubic meters of gas and 80 million tonnes of condensate. This move aligns with BP’s goal to raise upstream production to 250,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day by 2027.
3. Strategic European Supply Expansion
Gas from ACG and Babek is poised to bolster European energy security, with Azerbaijani volumes currently supplying about 5% of EU demand through the Southern Gas Corridor. Expansion of these projects deepens integration in the Caspian Sea region and strengthens an alternative to Russian gas imports.
