Brazil avoids nationwide China poultry ban after Newcastle disease case
JBS•China will restrict poultry imports from Brazil’s Santa Catarina state after a Newcastle disease outbreak at a turkey farm, rather than impose a nationwide ban. Chile imposed statewide restrictions, while Mexico suspended poultry imports from all of Brazil.
1. China limits restrictions
Brazil’s government said China’s restrictions on poultry imports following a Newcastle disease outbreak at a turkey farm will be limited to Santa Catarina state. The Agriculture Ministry said negotiations helped prevent a suspension of imports from across Brazil.
2. Other trade measures
Chile has imposed statewide restrictions, while Mexico suspended poultry imports from the entire country, saying the measure protects domestic production because Mexico is free of Newcastle disease. Santa Catarina accounts for around 15% of Brazil’s poultry production.
3. Prior outbreak context
Brazil last reported a Newcastle disease outbreak in July 2024 in neighboring Rio Grande do Sul state. China maintained a statewide embargo until January 2026 following that outbreak.
