Brazil's central bank chief says US questions on Pix payment were an excuse for tariffs

BRASILIA, July 16, (Reuters) - Questions raised by the U.S. on Brazil's instant payment system, Pix, were an excuse for the country to announce a 25% tariff on imports from the South American nation, the chief of Brazil's central bank, Gabriel Galipolo, said on Thursday.
The central bank, which manages Pix, will continue offering the system free of charge and will keep engaging with other central banks, said governor Gabriel Galipolo during a press conference in Brasilia.
