Bruker’s BioSpec 18T MRI Boosts Spatial Resolution for Cancer, Neuroscience
BRKR•Bruker Corp commissioned a BioSpec™ 18 Tesla preclinical MRI at Champalimaud Foundation in Lisbon. The system provides increased spatial resolution and sensitivity for in vivo cancer and neuroscience research, complementing existing 16.4T and 9.4T systems to enable advanced biomarker discovery.
1. Commissioning of BioSpec 18T MRI
Bruker commissioned its BioSpec™ 18 Tesla horizontal-bore preclinical MRI at the Champalimaud Foundation’s preclinical MRI laboratory in Lisbon. This marks the first installation of the world’s highest-field horizontal-bore system, expanding Bruker’s footprint in ultra-high field imaging.
2. Technical Specifications and Enhancements
The BioSpec 18T system delivers superior spatial resolution and sensitivity compared with lower-field instruments, supporting advanced magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopic imaging methods. It operates alongside the foundation’s existing 16.4T vertical-bore and 9.4T horizontal-bore systems.
3. Research Applications and Impact
Under Prof. Noam Shemesh, the 18T MRI will enable in vivo studies of cancer, metastasis, brain plasticity and neural dynamics in preclinical models. Researchers plan to leverage its ultra-high field capabilities to discover novel imaging biomarkers with translational relevance.
