CAISO approves proposal to speed grid connections for large loads
XLU•CAISO’s board approved procedures intended to connect large loads, including data centers and manufacturing operations, to the grid more quickly and reliably. CAISO plans to file the proposal with FERC by November 16.
1. Proposal approved
CAISO’s board approved a proposal to establish new procedures for connecting large loads to the grid. CAISO said it will file the proposal with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission by November 16.
2. Flexible connections
The proposal would allow large loads to interconnect to the transmission system with flexibility until associated network upgrades are complete. It also includes measures to improve coordination with utilities, prevent cost shifting and increase visibility into large-load connections.
3. FERC requirements
FERC directed CAISO and other grid operators to demonstrate that their rules and processes can connect large loads without compromising reliability or shifting costs to other customers. CAISO said the proposal would improve planning and operational awareness and expedite large-load energization.
