California Resources Launches First CO₂ Injection at Carbon TerraVault I with 1.46M Ton Capacity
CRC•California Resources performed first CO₂ injection at Carbon TerraVault I in Elk Hills Field, launching California’s inaugural CCS project with 1.46 million metric tons annual capacity and 38 million tons total storage. The CRC-Brookfield joint venture pledged $1 million to Kern County and filed eight additional reservoirs for 352 million tons of potential storage.
1. First CO₂ Injection at CTV I
California Resources achieved the first CO₂ injection at Carbon TerraVault I, marking California’s first operational carbon capture and storage project. The injection was conducted at the company’s Elk Hills Field, converting its cryogenic gas plant output into permanent underground storage.
2. Storage Capacity and Future Permits
CTV I – 26R reservoir is engineered to store up to 1.46 million metric tons of CO₂ annually and up to 38 million metric tons in total. CRC has submitted eight additional reservoirs for EPA Class VI permits, representing 352 million metric tons of potential future storage.
3. Joint Venture and Community Commitments
The Carbon TerraVault joint venture, 51% owned by CRC and 49% by Brookfield, has committed over $1 million to support Kern County communities and will establish a Community Advisory Council in 2026. This partnership underpins CRC’s strategy to lower its net emissions and drive scalable carbon management solutions.
