1. Crisis risk seen as limited
Cambridge Associates sees another euro area sovereign debt crisis as unlikely, with contagion from France’s fiscal stress remaining limited. It cites stronger bank balance sheets, improved peripheral economies’ finances and more credible policy backstops as factors that have reduced systemic risk.
2. French fiscal pressure
France’s 10-year spread over Germany exceeded 170 basis points for the first time since 2011, and its yield topped 5% for the first time since 2002. The proposed 2027 budget targets a deficit of 5% of GDP, above the EU’s 3% threshold, amid political gridlock.
3. Portfolio positioning
The firm retains overweights to global ex-US equities and unhedged global ex-US sovereign bonds versus US equivalents, anticipating dollar weakness.
