Canaan sees tighter lending favoring anchor tenants in neocloud market
CAN•Independent AI cloud providers face tighter financing as annual AI infrastructure spending approaches $1 trillion, with lenders increasingly assessing whether customer contracts can support GPU debt. CoreWeave's 2031 notes yielded more than 15% in mid-October, while Nebius secured a $3.5 billion, 364-day Citi facility.
1. Financing pressures grow
Lenders are increasingly favoring anchor tenants in the neocloud market, focusing on whether customer contracts can support GPU debt rather than revenue per GPU-hour. CoreWeave's 2031 notes yielded more than 15% in mid-October. Nebius secured a $3.5 billion, 364-day Citi facility, initially priced at SOFR plus 2.75%, ahead of further longer-term financing.
2. Consolidation risk
Consolidation could leave AI developers with fewer compute suppliers and less negotiating power as vertically integrated competitors expand. Annual AI infrastructure spending is approaching $1 trillion.
