Canada aims to cut time needed for project reviews, and address strikes

Canada on Monday unveiled draft legislation that would speed up the approval process for major natural resource projects, a goal Prime Minister Mark Carney says is necessary to help deal with US tariffs.

The bill would establish a one-year time frame for federal reviews and decisions, in part by conducting federal permit processes and reviews simultaneously instead of one after another.

Carney has said Canada has to cut back on obstacles to growth, in particular streamlining a complex federal approval process for infrastructure projects. Lengthy permitting times are one reason why some energy and resource projects in Canada have taken a decade or more to move from proposal to completion.
