Canada gives Cleveland-Cliffs 15 days to reverse planned job cuts
CLF•Canada gave Cleveland-Cliffs 15 days to reverse planned job cuts at an Ontario steel mill or face sanctions that could include a forced sale of the plant and a C$10,000 daily fine.
1. Government demands reversal
Industry Minister Melanie Joly said Cleveland-Cliffs’ planned cuts violate employment commitments the company made when it bought the Stelco plant. Cleveland-Cliffs denies the charge.
2. Possible sanctions
Joly said she could go to court to force a sale of the plant and impose a daily fine of C$10,000 if the company does not agree to the government’s demands within 15 days.
