Canada PM Carney said he had a good conversation with Trump on trade
SPY•Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he had a good conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump about future trade between the countries. Their teams will work in the coming weeks toward a mutually beneficial deal, Carney said.
1. Trade talks continue
Carney said his conversation with Trump built on recent constructive discussions about the outlines of a mutually beneficial trade deal. He said the deal would create jobs, improve affordability and respect Canada’s languages, culture and sovereignty; teams will work in the coming weeks to deliver that outcome.
2. Tariffs remain in place
Canada and the United States have imposed billions of dollars in tariffs on each other in recent months. Trump said last week a deal with Canada was coming soon, while Canada had previously reported limited progress in talks despite efforts to ease tariffs on steel and autos.
