Canada Stocks-TSX hits another record high, led by energy and industrials
SPY•TSX reaches another record closing high
Canada's main stock index rose to another record high on Tuesday as oil prices climbed and investors awaited U.S. inflation data, with energy and industrial shares posting among the biggest gains.
The S&P/TSX Composite Index .GSPTSE ended up 17.59 points, or 0.1%, at 36,475.92, eclipsing the record closing high it posted on Monday.
- The price of oil CLc1 settled 1.3% higher at $83.20 a barrel as the market focused more on supply disruptions in the Middle East and Russia than on signs of progress in talks between Oman and Iran over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
- "Oil markets are tight and investors are coming to terms with that," said Brian Madden, chief investment officer at First Avenue Investment Counsel.
- Investors globally have worried that higher oil prices could fuel inflation, leading to tighter monetary policy from major central banks, including the Federal Reserve.
- U.S. inflation figures due on Wednesday could offer clues on the Fed's policy path.
- Both energy .SPTTEN and industrials .GSPTTIN rose 0.8%, with the latter helped by a gain of 5.9% for the shares of Air Canada AC.TO after Scotiabank raised its price target on the stock.
- "In Canada, the industrial sector is ripe with opportunity because of some of the fiscal and industrial-policy initiatives underway," Madden said.
- Prime Minister Mark Carney has committed to invest over C$280 billion in the next five years on infrastructure, defense and housing as well as measures to enhance productivity.
- Utilities .GSPTTUT added 1.8%, clawing back some recent declines, as bond yields eased.
- Pet Valu Holdings PET.TO was a standout. Its shares rose 9.3% after the company reported quarterly results ahead of estimates.
- Technology .SPTTTK was a drag, falling 1.7%, with shares of application software company Open Text OTEX.TO down 3.2%.
