Canada unhappy with latest US offer to lower tariffs, CBC reports

Aug. 12 (Reuters) - Canadian officials working to persuade Washington not to impose additional tariffs next week are unhappy with the latest U.S. offer to ease the measures, CBC News reported on Wednesday, citing two sources.

U.S. President Donald Trump said last month he would impose 50% tariffs on a wide range of imports from Canada on Aug. 19 unless Ottawa ended what he called discriminatory treatment of American-made cars, alcohol and dairy goods.

The two sides are holding daily negotiations in Washington in an effort to work out a deal. In return for concessions, Canada is seeking relief from the tariffs that Trump imposed on a raft of imports last year.

CBC said the U.S. side offered a new proposal on Tuesday that would lower some tariffs but not by as much as the Canadians wanted.

The offices of U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Dominic LeBlanc, the Canadian federal minister in charge of U.S. trade, did not respond to requests for comment.
