Canadian Pacific Kansas City published its Climate Insights report consolidating climate governance, risk management and emissions reduction strategies and released its second Climate Mileposts update detailing progress. The 2026 Mileposts highlights deployment of 100 Tier 4 locomotives, ongoing hydrogen locomotive testing and network upgrades including siding extensions and track improvements.

1. Consolidation of Climate Governance and Strategy

Canadian Pacific Kansas City replaced its 2021 Climate Strategy and 2023 Commitment to Climate Action with the integrated Climate Insights report, outlining its governance framework, risk assessment processes and emissions reduction targets for a sustainable North American rail network.

2. Deployment of Tier 4 Locomotives and Energy Management

The 2026 Climate Mileposts report highlights the deployment of 100 new Tier 4 locomotives alongside expanded energy management technologies to lower the carbon intensity of freight operations across CPKC’s network.

3. Hydrogen Locomotive Testing and Fuel Infrastructure

CPKC is conducting real-world testing of hydrogen locomotive prototypes and expanding hydrogen refuelling infrastructure to advance its phased locomotives decarbonization plan and future fleet mix.

4. Network Capacity and Resilience Enhancements

The company is investing in siding extensions, track upgrades and advanced inspection technologies to improve network capacity, operational resilience and support growth under variable climate conditions.
