CanSino Biologics Hong Kong stock 6185.HK led the slide in HK-listed shares of Chinese vaccine makers after news that BioNTech 22UAy.DE halted its mRNA colorectal cancer vaccine trial following a safety review.
CanSino's Hong Kong shares dropped 8.6% to HK$29.02 and its Shanghai shares 688185.SS fell 9.4% to 75.08 yuan.
BioNTech study end weighs on mRNA vaccine sentiment
BioNTech said it will end a mid-stage study of its experimental mRNA cancer vaccine after an independent committee found the treatment was unlikely to help colorectal cancer patients live longer, sending the company's U.S. shares down on Friday.
BioNTech's trial failure came days after Merck MRK.N and Moderna MRNA.O said their mRNA-based vaccine helped prevent return and spread of melanoma in a trial; the success had raised hopes for similar mRNA-based vaccines.
