Caterpillar crowned Tom March and Brian Hayden as winners of its 2026 Global Dealer Technician and Operator Challenges highlighting industry skill gaps. The company plans a $25 million innovation challenge launching spring 2026 as part of a $100 million workforce initiative to fill over 38,000 technician roles by 2028.

1. Global Dealer Technician Challenge

Caterpillar’s 2026 Global Dealer Technician Challenge saw thousands of technicians compete through diagnostic and repair tasks under time pressure, with only 10 finalists advancing. Tom March of England, representing Finning UK, was crowned champion as Cat dealers face demand for more than 38,000 technicians globally by 2028.

2. Global Operator Challenge

Since spring 2025, operators from over 40 countries tested material loading, precision placement and advanced machine control across wheel loaders, excavators and dozers. Brian Hayden of the United States emerged as the 2026 Global Operator Challenge World Champion, securing a $10,000 cash prize or equivalent trip.

3. Building the Future Workforce Initiative

As part of a five-year, $100 million commitment to workforce development, Caterpillar will launch a $25 million innovation challenge in spring 2026. This initiative aims to identify and scale solutions that equip technicians and operators with skills for an increasingly digital and autonomous construction industry.
