Cboe Volatility Index surged 14.6% to 21.35 as stocks fell over 1% across major indexes following hotter-than-expected wholesale inflation report. The Dow dropped 1.43%, Nasdaq 1.40% and S&P 500 1.08% on renewed market turbulence.

1. Volatility Index Spike

The Cboe Volatility Index climbed 14.6% to 21.35 after the Producer Price Index showed wholesale inflation accelerating 0.5% month-over-month and core PPI rising 0.8% against 0.3% expectations. Volatility-linked products saw a notable uptick in trading activity as investors sought hedges.

2. Equity Market Declines

At the opening bell, the Dow fell 1.43%, Nasdaq declined 1.40% and the S&P 500 slid 1.08%, reflecting broad selling pressure across technology, cyclicals and financial sectors. The Russell 2000 also dropped 1.63%, driving demand for volatility protection.

3. Revenue Implications for Cboe

Higher VIX levels typically boost trading volumes and fee income from options and futures on Cboe’s platforms. This spike may help offset weaker activity in cash equity listings and support Cboe Global Markets’ overall trading revenue.
