China details outcome of EU trade talks on hybrid, electric vehicles
FXI•China's commerce ministry said a new EU arrangement would allow continued growth in Chinese hybrid vehicle exports and give China a quota no smaller than that of any other country. The ministry also said both sides agreed to adjust export quotas upward from 2025 figures.
1. Quota terms
China's commerce ministry said the EU arrangement would ensure Chinese hybrid vehicle exports have a quota no smaller than quotas allocated to any other import source. It said EU measures must not specifically target Chinese products or discriminate against Chinese firms.
2. Export growth
The ministry said both sides agreed to adjust hybrid vehicle export quotas upward from 2025 figures to ensure opportunities and stable growth for Chinese enterprises. The comments followed remarks by European Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic that the deal could cut Chinese hybrid car exports to the bloc by more than half.
3. Trade talks
The agreement followed three months of discussions between Sefcovic and Chinese officials, including Commerce Minister Wang Wentao. The EU effort aimed to reduce its trade deficit with China.
