China details outcome of EU trade talks on hybrid, electric vehicles
SPY•China’s commerce ministry said an EU arrangement would allow continued growth in Chinese hybrid vehicle exports, with a quota no smaller than that of any other country. Both sides agreed to adjust export quotas upward from 2025 figures.
1. Quota terms
China’s commerce ministry said the export quota for Chinese hybrid vehicles would not be lower than quotas allocated to other import sources. It said EU measures must not specifically target Chinese products or discriminate against Chinese firms, and that quotas would be adjusted upward from 2025 figures to support export opportunities and stable growth.
2. Trade discussions
The ministry said the consensus safeguards Chinese companies’ interests and provides a stable, predictable trade and investment environment. The arrangement followed three months of discussions between European Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic and Chinese officials, including Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, amid years of disputes over Chinese exports to the EU.
