China’s 2 Trillion Yuan AI Data Center Plan Limits AMD Participation
AMD•China plans to spend 2 trillion yuan ($295 billion) for AI data centers, sourcing at least 80% of core chips from domestic suppliers and curbing Advanced Micro Devices’ participation. Micron’s high-bandwidth memory is sold out through 2025, tightening DRAM supply but having limited direct effect on AMD.
1. China’s AI Data Center Blueprint
Beijing is drafting a plan to invest around 2 trillion yuan over five years in a nationwide network of interconnected AI data centers. The blueprint envisions state operators like China Mobile and China Telecom overseeing the system, with domestic vendors such as Huawei supplying at least 80% of core AI chips, constraining potential orders for Advanced Micro Devices.
2. Micron’s HBM Sellout and AMD Impact
Micron has booked its high-bandwidth memory (HBM) through 2025 with predetermined pricing, creating tight DRAM production capacity. While this capacity squeeze enhances Micron’s margins, it exerts limited immediate pressure on AMD given the differing product portfolios and market positioning.
