China's September exports blow past forecasts, imports accelerate
FXI•China's exports rose 36.3% year over year in September, above the 25.5% forecast, while imports grew 31.0%. The trade surplus reached $938.11 billion in the first nine months of the year.
1. Exports exceed forecasts
China's exports surged 36.3% year over year in September, up from 25.0% growth in August and well above economists' 25.5% forecast. Imports rose 31.0%, compared with 28.2% growth in August and a 24.5% forecast.
2. Surplus nears $1 trillion
China's trade surplus reached $938.11 billion in the first nine months of the year, putting it on course to surpass $1 trillion sooner than last year unless exports slow sharply in the final quarter. Strong exports have helped offset weak consumer spending and investment, while factory-gate prices rose at their fastest pace in more than four years in September and consumer inflation edged up but lagged forecasts.
3. Trade risks and demand
A deal announced earlier this month to limit Chinese hybrid vehicle exports to the European Union is likely to weigh on auto trade over time, though exporters may increase shipments before trade measures are laid out in December. Analysts expect demand for Chinese-made technology products, including semiconductors, to remain robust as global AI infrastructure expands.
