Citigroup Integrates Bitcoin Custody with $30 Trillion Asset Platform
Citigroup is building institutional-grade Bitcoin custody and settlement systems within its existing platform that manages $30 trillion in traditional assets. It aims to enable clients to handle Bitcoin alongside securities, bonds and tokenized assets while exploring cross-margining to streamline operations and reduce friction.
1. Institutional-Grade Bitcoin Custody
Citigroup is developing institutional-grade custody and settlement systems to securely hold Bitcoin. This addition leverages its existing investor services platform, which currently manages roughly $30 trillion in traditional assets, to provide compliant storage solutions for institutional clients.
2. Unified Asset Management
The integration allows institutional investors to manage Bitcoin within the same account framework as equities, bonds and tokenized assets. Consolidated reporting and custody could simplify portfolio oversight and reduce administrative complexity.
3. Cross-Margining and Operational Efficiency
Citigroup is exploring cross-margining between crypto and traditional assets to lower collateral requirements and improve liquidity management. This initiative aims to streamline back-office operations and reduce friction for clients engaging in both markets.
