Clearway Energy Names Michael Brown as General Counsel Starting June 1, 2026
Effective June 1, 2026, Clearway Energy’s long-serving Executive VP and General Counsel Kevin P. Malcarney will retire after nearly 20 years, staying through June 26 in a non-executive capacity. Michael A. Brown, formerly VP and Assistant General Counsel at The New York Times and ex-Clearway Deputy GC, returns as successor.
1. Retirement of Kevin P. Malcarney
On June 1, 2026, Kevin P. Malcarney will step down as Executive VP, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary after nearly two decades with the company. He has led Clearway’s legal and compliance teams since May 2018 and will remain in a non-executive role through June 26 to ensure a smooth handover.
2. Appointment of Michael A. Brown
Michael A. Brown will assume the roles of Senior VP, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary effective June 1, 2026. Brown re-joins Clearway after serving as VP and Assistant General Counsel at The New York Times since March 2023 and previously held senior legal roles at Clearway from 2018 to 2021.
3. Transition and Governance Implications
The succession will be formalized in a Current Report on Form 8-K, aligning with SEC requirements. The change preserves continuity in legal oversight across Clearway’s 13.6 GW clean energy portfolio, with Brown’s prior work on business architecture expected to support future regulatory and strategic initiatives.
