Coherent unveils AxioView catheter fibers and 300W sub-1µs germanium-free modulator

COHRCOHR

Coherent launched AxioView imaging fibers for OCT, NIRS and multimodal catheters, providing ISO 13485-certified, high-resolution assemblies for cardiovascular, neurovascular and gastrointestinal medical OEMs. It also unveiled a germanium-free electro-optic modulator generating sub-1µs pulses up to 300W for CO₂ laser via drilling and introduced the 1W Sapphire XT visible laser.

1. Coherent Unveils AxioView™ Imaging Fiber Assemblies for Advanced Medical Catheters

Coherent has launched its AxioView™ imaging fiber assemblies, engineered for optical coherence tomography (OCT), near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and multimodal catheter-based imaging systems. Debuting at Photonics West 2026, AxioView™ targets cardiovascular, neurovascular and gastrointestinal procedures, offering ball-tip, side-fire and chisel distal geometries. Built in ISO 13485-certified facilities, the assemblies promise consistent optical performance from prototype through high-volume production, enabling medical OEMs to shorten development cycles while meeting stringent regulatory requirements.

2. Germanium-Free Electro-Optic Modulator Sets New Standard for Semiconductor Via Drilling

Coherent’s new electro-optic modulator (EOM) delivers sub-microsecond pulse generation at up to 300 W without relying on scarce germanium. Capable of producing pulses under 1 µs with rise and fall times below 200 ns, this solution outpaces conventional acousto-optic modulators in speed and power handling. A 300 W production version is shipping now, with a 1,000 W alpha prototype available for evaluation. By eliminating diffractive beam angles and simplifying alignment, the EOM targets high-throughput via drilling in semiconductor fabs, addressing both performance demands and supply-chain constraints.

3. AI-Driven Data Center Demand Fuels Revenue and Margin Expansion

Coherent’s strategic investments in AI-optimized laser solutions have spurred a double-digit increase in data center orders over the past two quarters. High-power fiber amplifiers for neural-network training have driven a 15% rise in photonics segment revenues, while gross margins expanded by 180 basis points year-over-year. Management highlights robust backlog growth—with commitments exceeding $400 million through mid-year—and expects continued demand from cloud providers ramping next-generation AI clusters. Investors are closely watching operating leverage and free cash flow conversion as the company scales production of AI-centric products.

4. Forbes Recognition Highlights Strength in Culture and Governance

Coherent has been named to Forbes’ 2026 America’s Best Companies list, reflecting excellence across financial performance, employee engagement and corporate reputation. The ranking assesses over 100 metrics in areas such as long-term growth, customer trust and sustainability. CEO Jim Anderson credited the honor to the company’s inclusive culture and disciplined execution, while Chief People Officer Grace Lee emphasized the impact of employee sentiment surveys, which showed a 92% favorable rating on career development and work-life balance. The accolade supports Coherent’s positioning with institutional investors focused on environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria.
