Con Edison Powers 45 Electric School Buses with 23 Dual-Port Chargers in South Bronx
ED•Con Edison energized New York’s largest electric school bus fleet by installing 23 dual-port chargers to support 45 buses in the South Bronx. The initiative prevents 1 million pounds of CO2 emissions each school year and was backed by a $450,000 incentive.
1. Fleet Electrification
Con Edison installed 23 dual-port charging stations at GVC’s South Bronx depot to energize 45 new electric school buses, replacing diesel units. This marks the largest electric school bus fleet in New York State and positions GVC to serve students with cleaner, quieter transportation.
2. Emissions Reduction and Health Benefits
The switch to electric buses will cut roughly 1 million pounds of CO2 emissions each school year, eliminating tailpipe pollutants that aggravate respiratory illnesses. Residents along Zerega Avenue can expect improved air quality and quieter streets, addressing asthma rates that exceed twice the national average.
3. Funding and Incentives
A $450,000 incentive from Con Edison’s MHD Make-Ready Pilot program offset charger installation costs, while the New York School Bus Incentive Program funded 20 of the electric buses and associated equipment. Con Edison also upgraded on-site electric service and provided a transformer to support the new load.
4. Grid Upgrades and Expansion
With approval from the state Public Service Commission, Con Edison is prioritizing grid upgrades along Zerega Avenue and Hunts Point corridors to accommodate medium- and heavy-duty vehicle electrification. These enhancements will enable faster deployment of additional electric fleets and bolster New York’s clean energy transition.
