Consumers Energy targets 19 GW solar, wind, storage by 2040 in Michigan energy supply plan

The plan targets more than 19 GW of solar, wind and battery storage by 2040 to align with Michigan’s 2023 clean energy law.
Cost outlook and customer savings
Consumers Energy said electric-supply costs are projected to rise below 3% inflation while the company expands customer programs that have delivered $8.5 billion in bill savings since 2009.
Natural gas additions and power purchases
It also adds 1.4 GW of fast-start natural gas capacity in Bay and Genesee counties to support peak-demand reliability.
The plan includes long-term power purchases, including a clean-resource contract and a Midland natural-gas plant agreement, to bolster supply.
Consumers Energy unveils 20-year supply plan
Consumers Energy, the CMS Energy unit, unveiled a 20-year energy supply plan centered on reliability, affordability, renewables growth and clean-energy compliance.
