In its latest strategic update, Corning Inc. has realigned its capital allocation and R&D efforts to prioritize its optical fiber and cable business, which now represents approximately 30% of total revenues. Management reports that demand from generative AI data centers has driven a 15% year-over-year increase in optical glass shipments during the third quarter, while 5G network rollouts in North America and Asia contributed an additional 10% uplift. The company has expanded capacity at its Wilmington, North Carolina, and Harrodsburg, Kentucky, plants, targeting a combined annual output of 1.8 million kilometers of fiber by 2025. Corning’s backlog for high-grade fiber orders stands at $450 million, up from $380 million six months ago, as cloud service providers accelerate infrastructure upgrades. Meanwhile, operating margins in the segment rose to 24%, compared with 19% in the same period last year, reflecting improved scale and ongoing cost-reduction initiatives.
