Costco Boosts Gas Pump Cashback to 5%, Senate Purchase Signals Investor Confidence

COSTCOST

Costco has increased cash back rewards for Costco Anywhere Visa Card holders from 4% to 5% at its gas pumps for the first $7,000 of annual purchases, raising the maximum reward to $350. Additionally, Senator Markwayne Mullin disclosed a $15,001–$50,000 purchase of Costco shares on December 29th.

1. Costco Increases Gas Rewards for Branded Card Holders

Costco has quietly raised the cash-back rate for fuel purchases made at its warehouse gas stations to 5% for holders of the Costco Anywhere Visa Card, up from the previous 4%. This top-tier rate applies to the first $7,000 in annual gas purchases at Costco locations, enabling members to earn up to $350 in rewards versus the former maximum of $280. After members exceed the $7,000 threshold, the rate reverts to 1% for any additional spending through the end of the calendar year.

2. Broader Fuel and EV Charging Benefits Remain Unchanged

While the elevated 5% rate is exclusive to Costco pumps, cardholders continue to receive 4% cash-back on all other eligible fuel purchases and EV charging stations outside of Costco. This maintains parity with the previous program for off-site fuel, ensuring that routine commuting and non-Costco station fill-ups remain lucrative for executive and non-executive cardholders alike.

3. Strategic Incentive to Drive Membership Upgrade and Loyalty

With more than 80 million paid members, Costco is leveraging the enhanced gas rewards to encourage upgrades to the co-branded credit card, which carries no annual fee beyond an active warehouse membership. By boosting potential annual rewards by 25%, the company aims to strengthen card adoption, bolster profitability from interchange fees shared with Citi, and sustain its roughly 90% membership renewal rate, a key driver of recurring revenue and long-term customer lifetime value.
