BERLIN, Sept. 9 (Reuters) - U.S. defence startup Covenant plans to begin mass production of what it describes as a low-cost cruise missile in Germany in early 2027, targeting European nations scrambling to buy long-range weapons in the face of a growing Russian threat.
Covenant's Anthem missile will offer a fresh option to nations seeking to expand long-range inventories that currently consist of a limited number of highly expensive missiles deemed too small to counter the large arsenals of a nation such as Russia.
"Our baseline production rate when we open the doors is 1,000 Anthems a year (...) and the facility (is) designed for 5,000 Anthems," Covenant's President and Chief Growth Officer Abby Denburg told Reuters in an interview published on Wednesday.
"Our aim is to reach 5,000 by 2028, or at least run rate 5,000 during 2028," co-founder and CEO Michael Kaufman added, referring to the production facility in the eastern state of Saxony.
