CSX has signed a $670 million contract with Wabtec to acquire 100 new Evolution Series locomotives and modernize 50 existing units with AC traction and digital solutions. Deliveries of new locomotives begin in 2026 with modernized units starting in 2027, targeting improved fuel efficiency, tractive effort and fleet reliability.

CSX has entered a $670 million agreement with Wabtec to purchase 100 new Evolution Series locomotives and modernize 50 aging units. The contract includes converting D9 locomotives from DC to AC traction to extend service life and standardize the fleet.
2. Operational Benefits
The Evolution Series locomotives are engineered to enhance fuel efficiency, increase tractive effort, and boost overall reliability for long-haul and heavy-duty operations. The AC traction conversion of existing units is expected to further optimize performance and reduce maintenance downtime.
3. Digital Solutions
The upgraded and new locomotives will feature Trip Optimizer with Smart Horsepower per Ton, an EPA-certified system designed to automate throttle adjustments for optimal fuel use. Advanced control and diagnostic technologies will enable real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance across the fleet.
4. Delivery Schedule
CSX will begin receiving the new Evolution Series locomotives in 2026, with deliveries of the modernized AC-traction units slated to start in 2027. This phased rollout aligns with the company’s long-term fleet planning to minimize service disruptions.
