Defense Secretary Hegseth Visits Rocket Lab After $816M Satellite Contract
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth toured Rocket Lab as part of his 'Arsenal of Freedom' tour, calling it 'the engine of the new arsenal of freedom' and a cornerstone of the defense industrial base. His visit follows Rocket Lab’s $816 million contract to build 18 threat-detection satellites for the Pentagon.
1. Defense Secretary Praises Rocket Lab as “Engine of the New Arsenal of Freedom”
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth toured Rocket Lab’s headquarters this week as part of his “Arsenal of Freedom” tour, positioning the company as a cornerstone of America’s defense industrial base. During his visit, Hegseth emphasized that future conflicts will be decided in orbit and lauded Rocket Lab’s rapid development cycles. He told company engineers and executives that Rocket Lab’s Electron and Neutron launch vehicles represent the agile capability needed to maintain U.S. superiority in low Earth orbit. The visit underscores growing Pentagon confidence in commercially driven aerospace firms to support critical national security missions.
2. Pentagon Awards $816 Million Satellite Production Contract
In December, the Department of Defense awarded Rocket Lab an $816 million contract to build 18 satellites designed for advanced missile launch detection. Under the agreement, Rocket Lab will leverage its Photon satellite platform and in-house manufacturing facilities to deliver the first spacecraft within 24 months of contract award. The deal marks the single largest defense contract in the company’s history and boosts its backlog by more than 50%, with nearly half of expected 2026 revenues now tied to defense work. Investors should note that this contract validates the Pentagon’s strategy of integrating fast-paced, commercial aerospace companies into its space architecture and paves the way for additional follow-on awards over the next decade.
