Delta CEO Targets AI Overhaul of 17 Aged Air Traffic Control Systems
Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said AI’s biggest opportunity lies in modernising air traffic control, offering gains in travel efficiency through turbulence prediction and airflow analysis. Delta has deployed its AI assistant Delta Concierge, while U.S. controllers rely on 17 systems aged 2–50 years and face a 3,800-staff shortfall.
1. CEO Highlights Air Traffic Control as AI's Prime Opportunity
Ed Bastian said AI will deliver more operational benefit by tackling air traffic control challenges than by enhancing in-flight services, pointing to quicker travel and greater efficiency through advanced turbulence prediction and airflow modeling.
2. Delta Deploys AI in Customer Operations
In October, Delta introduced its AI assistant, Delta Concierge, to a select user group in its app, providing real-time flight updates, baggage tracking and claims support to streamline the customer journey.
3. Antiquated Systems and Staffing Shortages
U.S. air traffic control depends on 17 critical systems aged two to fifty years and endures a 3,800-controller staffing shortfall, resulting in extended workweeks, mandatory overtime and delays in technology upgrades.
