Delta Air Lines Raises Bag Fees to $45/$55/$200 After $400M Fuel Cost Spike

DALDAL

Delta will raise its domestic first and second checked bag fees by $10 to $45 and $55, and third bag fee by $50 to $200, effective Wednesday. Jet fuel has doubled to $4.88 per gallon, adding $400 million to Q1 operating costs and forcing regional schedule cuts.

1. Fee Increase Implementation

Delta will introduce a $10 hike for first and second domestic checked bags and a $50 increase for a third bag, setting fees at $45, $55 and $200 respectively, starting this Wednesday.

2. Surge in Jet Fuel Prices

Since late February, U.S. jet fuel prices have nearly doubled to $4.88 per gallon amid Middle East supply disruptions, elevating one of the airline’s largest operating costs.

3. Financial Impact and Capacity Adjustments

The fuel spike has added roughly $400 million to Delta’s first-quarter operating expenses, prompting capacity reductions on routes where high fuel burn can’t be offset through fares.
