Democrats won big, but what is their mandate?
SPY•After a sweeping midterm victory that gave Democrats control of Congress, party leaders are prioritizing affordability and healthcare while debating investigations of President Donald Trump and progressive proposals such as Medicare for All.
1. Priorities and divisions
Democrats are framing their victory as a mandate for change, but disagree on how far voters want them to go. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer warned that the election was not a “blank check,” while he and Hakeem Jeffries said affordability is the party’s top priority.
2. Healthcare proposals
Democrats aim to make Obamacare plans more affordable and reverse some Medicaid cuts. Some also want steps toward Medicare for All; incoming House member Randy Villegas said the party must offer a vision that includes universal healthcare.
3. Accountability and reforms
Democratic members voiced support for holding Trump accountable and reining in corporate money in politics, though leaders have not disclosed their plans for the new Congress. Proposals raised by members and interest groups include campaign finance reform, a $17 federal minimum wage, universal childcare and restrictions on federal immigration officers’ use of force.
