DoorDash-Instacart deal reportedly raises gig worker pay concerns
CART•DoorDash’s reported $17 billion deal for Instacart could expand delivery opportunities but may not raise gig workers’ take-home earnings. The deal is expected to close in late 2027 or the first half of 2028, subject to shareholder approval and regulatory clearance.
1. Worker pay concerns
The reported deal could increase competition for delivery orders, reduce workers’ alternatives and give the combined platform greater influence over pay. It could expand delivery opportunities without guaranteeing higher take-home earnings.
2. Flexible work continues
Instacart shoppers would retain flexible hours and the ability to choose orders, including the option to decline DoorDash deliveries. Closing is expected in late 2027 or the first half of 2028, subject to shareholder approval and regulatory clearance.
