Dutch court allows Booking.com to require 40% office attendance
BKNG•An Amsterdam court ruled that Booking.com may require employees to spend at least 40% of their working time in the office. Only 27% currently meet that threshold under the voluntary arrangement.
1. Court approves policy
The court found that mandatory attendance was a reasonable way to promote team cohesion, training, development and collaboration, noting that a voluntary arrangement had failed. Booking.com had sued its works council after it refused to consent to the policy; the court ruled the council could not reasonably withhold consent.
2. Transition and safeguards
The policy includes a six-month transition period and a hardship clause for employees facing genuine difficulties. Booking.com must continue to provide enough workstations for employees who come to the office. The company said the policy sets a standard of an average of two office days per week and that it plans to continue dialogue with its works council and employees.
