Ecolab Invests $6.8 Billion to Expand AI Data Center Cooling Technologies

ECLECL

Ecolab invested $5 billion to acquire CoolIT and $1.8 billion for Ovivo’s electronics unit in the past year to expand liquid-cooling and ultra-pure water technology for AI data centers. CEO Christophe Beck forecasts future data centers will operate water- and carbon-neutral with car wash–level water usage, unlocking new revenue streams.

1. CEO Champions AI Cooling Innovation

Christophe Beck emphasizes that embracing AI data centers is crucial for economic growth and innovation in Minnesota. Drawing on his background in aerospace engineering, he argues that water and carbon neutrality can be achieved through new cooling methods rather than avoiding data center expansion.

2. Strategic Acquisitions Target Data Center Cooling

In March, Ecolab spent $5 billion to acquire Calgary-based CoolIT for liquid cooling solutions and invested $1.8 billion last year to buy Ovivo’s electronics unit specializing in ultra-pure water for semiconductor production. These deals aim to position Ecolab at the forefront of AI infrastructure services.

3. Water- and Carbon-Neutral Data Center Goals

Beck projects that next-generation data centers will recycle water within on-site cooling towers to reach water usage levels comparable to a car wash, while implementing energy efficiency gains to achieve carbon neutrality. This vision underpins Ecolab’s push into high-growth AI markets.
