The Colombian peso COP= led gains in the region, rising 0.2%, while equities .COLCAP also advanced 0.3%, led by 1.9% gains in oil firm Ecopetrol ECOPETROL.CN.
The Colombian currency has strongly outperformed its regional peers this month as the victory of right-wing President-Elect Abelardo de la Espriella has fueled expectations of a more business-friendly administration and reduced political uncertainty.
The Mexican peso MXN= edged 0.2% higher, while the country's stocks .MXX gained 0.5%. Mexico and the U.S. will resume talks on revising the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement on Tuesday.
Perez said that Mexico's peso should be followed very closely in light of the negotiations, considering Mexico is also run by a left-wing party that is not fully aligned with the U.S.
Separate data showed on Tuesday that the Mexican economy likely expanded by 1.7% in June on an annual basis. Retail sales in the country fell 0.6% in May from a month earlier.
