Eni Confirms 24 MMcf/d Offshore Libya Gas at 10,458-Foot J1-4/16 Well
Eni North Africa and Libya’s NOC confirmed a new offshore gas discovery in the J1-4/16 well in Block D at a depth of 10,458 feet, with tests yielding 14 MMcf/d and 24 MMcf/d. The find fulfills the ninth and final contractual exploration obligation under Contract 4/16 signed in June 2008.
1. J1-4/16 Well Gas Discovery
The J1-4/16 exploration well, drilled 95 kilometers offshore western Libya in Block D, reached 10,458 feet and delivered gas flows of 14 MMcf/d in initial testing and 24 MMcf/d under an expanded choke. The discovery marks a significant addition to Libya’s offshore gas portfolio.
2. Completion of Contract 4/16 Obligations
The find completes the ninth and final exploration commitment under the Contract 4/16 EPSA signed in June 2008, closing out Eni’s contractual drilling obligations for the block. This fulfillment may pave the way for transition to appraisal and commercial development phases.
3. Strategic and Market Implications
Offshore gas volumes of this scale strengthen Libya’s domestic supply and reinforce Eni’s role as a key Mediterranean energy supplier. The discovery aligns with regional demand for faster-cycle gas projects and could accelerate Eni’s upstream cash flow in North Africa.
