Eni Uncovers Up To 5 Tcf Gas and 450M Barrels Condensate Offshore Ivory Coast
Eni S.p.A. announced a major gas and condensate discovery at the Calao South prospect offshore Ivory Coast, estimating up to 5 trillion cubic feet of gas and 450 million barrels of condensate. The find at Block CI-501, where Eni holds a 90% stake, follows drilling of the Murene South-1X well.
1. Major Offshore Discovery
Eni drilled the Murene South-1X exploration well in Block CI-501 and identified both gas and condensate in the Calao channel complex. This marks the first successful well in the area since 2015 and confirms the prospectivity of the Ivory Coast offshore acreage.
2. Estimated Resource Potential
Initial estimates put the Calao South discovery at up to 5 trillion cubic feet of gas and 450 million barrels of condensate, equivalent to approximately 1.4 billion barrels of oil. These volumes position the find as one of Eni’s largest gas resources in West Africa to date.
3. Strategic Implications
Eni operates Block CI-501 with a 90% interest alongside state-owned Petroci Holding, enhancing its African portfolio after a recent 500 million-barrel oil discovery offshore Angola. The size of this discovery could elevate Eni’s gas production outlook and support future midstream and export infrastructure development in the region.
