Eni Validates 100% HVO Biofuel in MSC Cruise Engines, Plans 100,000t Supply

EE

Eni has validated use of 100% HVO biofuel in MSC’s cruise ship engines, confirming ISO 8217 compliance during a month-long trial that cuts lifecycle CO2 emissions by up to 90% versus marine gas oil. Eni will expand HVO supply across 35 Mediterranean ports, targeting 100,000 tonnes capacity by year-end.

1. HVO Trial on MSC Cruise Ship

In April 2026, Eni and MSC conducted a month-long trial of 100% hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) biofuel aboard the MSC Grandiosa, powering the ship’s main engines without modifications and meeting ISO 8217 marine fuel specifications.

2. Emissions and Performance

The trial demonstrated a lifecycle CO2 emissions reduction of up to 90% compared with conventional marine gas oil, with fuel consumption and engine efficiency matching MGO benchmarks and no negative impact on lubrication or maintenance intervals.

3. Supply Expansion

Building on its refining capabilities, Eni will roll out HVO bunkering services across 35 Mediterranean ports, aiming to achieve an annual supply capacity of 100,000 tonnes by the end of 2026 to serve cruise lines and broader shipping customers.
