Equinix says shift to 24/7 trading demands new infrastructure resilience strategy
EQIX•Equinix says continuous trading would require capital markets firms to redesign infrastructure for uninterrupted operations, with redundant systems, greater data center capacity and round-the-clock cybersecurity monitoring.
1. Infrastructure for continuous trading
Equinix's analysis says the shift to continuous trading would require capital markets firms to design infrastructure for uninterrupted operations rather than recovery from outages. Exchanges moving to 23/5 trading would retain roughly one hour for daily maintenance, while 24/7 markets would eliminate scheduled downtime.
2. Capacity and redundancy
The analysis says multiple production-ready environments would increase data center capacity needs in core financial hubs, with redundant systems needed to deliver equivalent trading performance. Hybrid architectures would keep latency-sensitive execution on private infrastructure while using cloud platforms for workloads that benefit from scalability and services. Continuous trading would also require redundant power and cooling, along with round-the-clock cybersecurity monitoring and incident response.
