EU eyes methane law delay, IEA to discuss oil stock releases if needed
USO•The EU is considering delaying methane rules for oil and gas imports due to take effect on January 1, 2027. The IEA’s Fatih Birol said member states may discuss releasing strategic oil reserves if needed, as the agency closely tracks diesel and other product markets.
1. EU considers delay
Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen said the EU is examining a possible delay to the import requirements in its methane law, which will require foreign oil and gas suppliers to monitor and report methane emissions from January 1, 2027. He said the delay could be a year, would not weaken the rules’ ambition and should depend on member states preparing to implement them.
2. IEA tracks fuel markets
IEA head Fatih Birol said member states may discuss releasing more strategic oil reserves if needed. He said the agency is closely tracking diesel and other product markets and discussing them with European countries and countries that export diesel and other products to Europe.
