EU mulls AWS gatekeeper status as UPS cuts Amazon volume to 8.8% and unveils Quick AI
EU regulators are evaluating whether to designate Amazon Web Services as a gatekeeper under the Digital Markets Act, extending obligations to cloud and AI offerings. UPS cut Amazon package volume to 8.8% of revenue, while Amazon launched its Quick AI desktop agent and four agentic AI Connect services for enterprises.
1. DMA Expands to AWS Cloud and AI Services
EU regulators have signaled plans to designate Amazon Web Services as a gatekeeper under the Digital Markets Act, which became applicable in May 2023. This would impose new dos and don’ts on AWS’s cloud and AI offerings to curb market dominance and boost competition.
2. UPS Cuts Amazon Shipment Volume
UPS CFO Brian Dykes reported Amazon shipments fell to 8.8% of total revenue, down from over 13%, as UPS shifts focus to small-business and premium deliveries. The company also plans to eliminate 30,000 jobs and close 24 facilities by year end to align capacity with lower Amazon volume.
3. Amazon Launches Quick AI and Agentic Services
Amazon introduced Quick, a desktop AI agent that integrates with Microsoft 365, Slack, Zoom, and more to perform tasks like drafting emails and scheduling meetings. It also unveiled four new agentic AI services—Connect Decisions, Connect Talent, Connect Customer AI, and Connect Health—aimed at expanding its enterprise software footprint.
