EU Regulators Weigh AWS Gatekeeper Designation as Amazon Pledges $48B India AI, Backs $2.5B Robotics SPAC
AMZN•EU antitrust regulators want to label AWS as a ‘gatekeeper’, exposing Amazon to stricter oversight that could hinder its cloud expansion in Europe. The company pledged $48B for Indian AI infrastructure, including $13B for data centers, and is backing Agility Robotics’ $2.5B SPAC merger to scale Digit humanoid robots.
1. EU Regulatory Push
European regulators have proposed designating AWS as a tech gatekeeper under the Digital Markets Act, citing its leading market share, significant turnover and integrated AI services. This status would impose new obligations on Amazon for data access, interoperability and transparency, potentially subjecting AWS to heavier fines and operational constraints in the EU.
2. India AI Infrastructure Commitment
Amazon outlined a $48 billion investment plan to expand AI, cloud and logistics infrastructure in India, earmarking $13 billion specifically for AI-focused data centers. The capital infusion is designed to support surging demand for cloud computing and AI workloads in one of Amazon’s fastest-growing regions.
3. Agility Robotics SPAC Merger
Amazon-backed Agility Robotics agreed to merge with Churchill Capital Corp XI in a SPAC deal valuing the combined entity at $2.5 billion and raising over $620 million in gross proceeds. Funds will accelerate the commercial rollout of the new Digit v5 humanoid robots, which offer enhanced lifting capacity, extended reach and longer operational cycles for warehouse automation.
