The European Commission has invoked interim powers under the Digital Markets Act to require Meta to reverse its recent restrictions on third-party AI integrations within WhatsApp. The EC set a firm compliance deadline and warned of daily fines capped at €5 million if Meta fails to comply.

These measures aim to ensure that independent developers and AI providers can integrate generative AI features into WhatsApp’s platform, potentially broadening the app’s functionality and spurring new partnerships. Meta must adjust its API policies and developer agreements to accommodate open AI access.

This enforcement action follows Meta’s designation as a gatekeeper for messaging services under the DMA. Meta is now required to submit detailed compliance plans within days, with a formal EU decision on binding orders and further penalties expected in the second quarter.
