EU to propose new curbs on Chinese imports, von der Leyen says
SPY•The European Commission will propose import curbs on China beyond agreed safeguards to halve shipments of Chinese hybrid cars, Ursula von der Leyen said. She cited an EU goods trade deficit with China of more than €1 billion ($1.12 billion) a day.
1. More safeguards planned
The European Commission will propose curbs on imports from China beyond the safeguard measures it agreed with Beijing to cut inbound shipments of Chinese hybrid cars by half, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Friday.
2. Trade imbalance cited
Von der Leyen said the deal would not fix a structural imbalance, noting that the EU's goods trade deficit with China exceeds €1 billion ($1.12 billion) a day. She said EU industries had called for action and that EU leaders clearly supported additional safeguards.
