EU wheat weakens with Black Sea peace efforts in focus

However, Russia has given no public indication it is ready to agree a maritime or energy truce with Ukraine and it was not immediately clear if Rubio was suggesting there had been movement on the Russian side after his talks with Lavrov. Tit-for-tat attacks by Russia and Ukraine on their ports and shipping have brought their Black Sea grain exports to a near standstill since July. Data from the Russian Grain Union lobby group showed on Wednesday that fewer countries are buying Russian wheat after the attacks. Only eight countries bought wheat from Russia, the world's biggest wheat exporter, in September, down from 26 a year earlier, the data showed. In August, the number of buyers fell to 16 from 43 in the same month of 2025. Grain trade association Coceral cut its forecast sharply for this year's corn (maize) output in the European Union to 48.6 million tons after hot, dry weather damaged crops. The US dollar rose on Wednesday to its highest level in nearly two months, as investors priced in a rate hike cycle from the Federal Reserve. PARIS, Sept 23 (Reuters) - European wheat fell on Wednesday, with traders citing optimism about diplomatic efforts to ease Black Sea ports disruptions and helped by a fall of the euro against the dollar. Benchmark December milling wheat BL2Z6 on Paris-based Euronext closed the daily session 1.3% lower at €240.50 ($273.91) a metric ton.
