Europe Capital Partners warns S&P 500's mega-cap tech concentration fuels fragility
SPY•Europe Capital Partners said the S&P 500's dependence on AI-driven mega-cap technology stocks is making the market fragile. At the end of the third quarter of 2026, 58% of constituents were more than 20% below their peaks, while the market-cap-weighted index had gained 10.4% year to date and the equal-weighted index had fallen 1.8%.
1. Index performance diverges
Europe Capital Partners' October 15 analysis said the S&P 500 was near its all-time high at the end of the third quarter of 2026, despite widespread declines among its constituents. Fifty-eight percent of constituents were more than 20% below their individual peaks, and 40% were down more than 30%. The equal-weighted index fell 1.8% year to date, compared with a 10.4% gain for the market-cap-weighted index.
2. Value opportunities
The analysis said the divergence creates opportunities for value investors able to distinguish falling share prices from deteriorating businesses.
